Flying
Birds was started in Australia a few years by two
young
Australian ladies keen to
travel, shop and buy household decorator
items. One had freshly returned
to Australia from a three year
posting to Jakarta with her
family and the other one was looking
for a challenge. A business
involving two Australian ladies
travelling back and forth
could only be called "Flying Birds".
Despite their best endeavours,
Flying Birds was only moderately
successful with the recession
in the early 1990s having no
positive effect on the ability
of Melbourne residents
to
purchase Indonesian decorative and household items.
The same recession led to
the family of one "Flying Bird"
leaving
the coop in Melbourne and establishing a new nest
in
Kuala Lumpur.

After
a short time settling in, Judy McCluskey recognized
that
furniture and decorator items
were readily available in
Kuala Lumpur from Thailand, China, Vietnam and
other Asian
countries
but few items of quality were available
from Indonesia.
Drawing on her experience
as an expatriate in Jakarta in
furnishing her home there, Judy
slowly built up the Flying Birds
operation
in Kuala Lumpur, to the point where, in November 1999,
the Flying Birds Kuala Lumpur
showroom was opened
in a beautiful old bungalow
off Jalan Ampang and nearby
the
famous Petronas twin towers.
